Nordic Biodesign

Spatial design that understands human wellbeing.

  • Nordic Biodesign is Helsinki Interiors’ approach to spatial design. It combines biophilic design, Nordic aesthetics and the latest research on how environments influence human experience, behaviour and wellbeing.

It is not only about how a space looks, but about how it feels to the person experiencing it.

Light, acoustics, materials, scale and the rhythm of space continuously affect the nervous system, often unconsciously. A well-designed environment can support concentration, recovery, learning and human interaction.

  • From the northern environment

Nordic Biodesign is rooted in the Nordic experience of space: shifting light, the rhythm of the seasons, maritime atmosphere, natural materials and silence.

Every project considers the identity of the place itself — not space as an isolated object.

    From research and practice

The approach combines insights from interior architecture, neuroscience and user experience research on how environments influence human emotion, behaviour and experience.

The goal is not to create a “nature theme”, but a spatial experience that genuinely supports wellbeing.

From technology, when nature alone is not enough

Not every environment allows a direct connection to nature. In these cases, we use solutions such as intelligent lighting, acoustics and indoor environmental control to support wellbeing and sensory experience.

  • Light

Lighting that supports circadian rhythm, concentration and recovery.

    Acoustics

A calm soundscape and acoustics that improve speech clarity and reduce sensory strain.

    Materials

Tactile and visually pleasing materials designed to endure both time and use.

    Spatial rhythm

Natural movement, balanced proportions and a harmonious relationship between spaces.

    Local identity

A colour palette, lighting and material world that genuinely belong to their environment.

    Technology

Intelligent solutions that support wellbeing when natural elements alone are not enough.

  • Helsinki Interiors’ Nordic Biodesign brings a Nordic perspective to spatial design that:

    • strengthens spatial experience and brand identity

    • supports learning, interaction and human connection

    • considers sensory sensitivity and the needs of care environments

    • creates long-lasting and sustainable spatial experiences
